Conroe has been one of the fastest-growing cities in the country for years. People come for more house for the money, the pines, Lake Conroe and a small-town feel within reach of Houston. Here’s what to know before you move.
Popular areas and neighborhoods
- Grand Central Park: A newer master-planned community on I-45 with trails, a lagoon and a quick drive to The Woodlands.
- Woodforest: Golf, amenities and larger homes on the Montgomery side.
- April Sound / Walden: Lakefront and golf communities on Lake Conroe. Often older homes with big lots.
- Downtown Conroe: Historic homes near the square’s restaurants, breweries and events.
- The Woodlands (south): Higher prices and top-rated amenities, with a short commute to Conroe.
- Willis / Montgomery: More land and a more rural feel.

Things locals wish they’d known
- Ask about the MUD. Many new subdivisions have Municipal Utility District taxes that can add a lot to your bill.
- Check the flood zone even if the listing doesn’t mention it. See our flood zone guide.
- Get a foundation and roof inspection. Clay soil and hail are facts of life here.
- File your homestead exemption right after you move in. Here’s how.
- I-45 traffic is real. Test your commute at rush hour before you commit.
Schools
Most of Conroe is served by Conroe ISD, a large district that includes The Woodlands. Parts of the area fall in Willis ISD and Montgomery ISD. Check the exact attendance zone for any address on the district’s website.
